Rectangular Dining Tables
A Long Table,
A Longer Evening
The rectangular table is the dining room classic: generous at the edges, easy to seat at both ends, and quietly architectural. Find the length that suits your room and the guests you gather this season.

Quickship
In Place Before the Guests
Selected rectangular tables are in stock as Quickship and leave sooner than made-to-order furniture. If a gathering is already on the calendar, the long table can be in place well before it.
The Rectangular Table Guide
What to Look for in a Rectangular Table
On a long table, the details do the work. Study these five before you settle on a length.
The edge
A long top is seen mostly from the side, so its edge becomes the line the whole room reads. A slim, tapered edge keeps even a generous table feeling light, while a thick slab gives it weight and presence.
The supports
Each base shapes how a table seats. Legs at the corners give the steadiest stance, while a trestle, a pair of slab supports, or legs set in from the ends leave the corners open to a chair.
The corners
Square corners give a table a precise, architectural line. Softened corners ease it into a busy room, and a boat-shaped top, narrower at the ends, moves a rectangle closer to an oval.
The grain
On a wood top, the grain runs the length of the table, and a single plank or carefully matched boards look calm across a long span. Stone and ceramic bring a pattern of their own, so look at where the veining falls from end to end.
The proportion
Judge the length against the width rather than on its own. A top two to three times as long as it is wide reads as linear and composed, while a shorter, wider top brings a more square, sociable feeling.

Rectangular Table FAQs
Is a rectangular table too formal for everyday meals?
Not when the finish is warm. Solid wood, slim lines, and softened edges read relaxed, and mixing chairs or adding a bench along one side loosens the look further. The same table suits a quiet supper and a full evening of guests.
Can a rectangular table work in a smaller dining room?
Yes. A slimmer top, a base that leaves legs and knees free, and a bench tucked under one side all suit a compact room, and running the table along the length of the room keeps the walkway open.
How far should a pendant hang above the table?
Aim for the bottom of the fixture to sit about 30 to 36 inches above the tabletop, centered on the table rather than the room. Over a long table, a linear fixture or a row of two or three smaller pendants suits the shape.
How do I style the center of a long table?
Keep arrangements low enough to see over, or tall and slender so conversation passes beneath. Repeat a few objects along the length rather than one large piece, and leave open surface for serving dishes.
Can a bench replace chairs along one side?
Yes. A bench seats an extra guest or two on the long side and slides out of the way when it is not needed. Choose a seat height close to the chairs opposite, and a width that tucks fully beneath the table.
How long is a table for six, eight, or ten?
As a rough guide, about 72 inches seats six, 96 inches seats eight, and 120 inches seats ten along the long sides, with room for one more at each end when the base leaves the ends open.
Where should a rectangular table sit in the room?
Run it along the length of the room and center it on the light fixture or a window rather than a wall, so the placement looks intentional. If the room opens to a kitchen, align the table with the island so the two read as a pair.
How do I pair chairs with a long table?
Armchairs bring presence to a long table. Confirm that the arms slide beneath the edge of the top, and past the apron if the table has one, so the chairs tuck in fully. Our team can help you pair chairs with a table through Design Assistance.
