From fine wines to the shape of light.

Established in 1874 in Copenhagen, Louis Poulsen's story began not with lighting but with the introduction of fine wines to the Danish market, founded by Ludvig Poulsen as a Copenhagen wine import company. When Copenhagen's first power station opened in 1892, the company's focus shifted toward the new world of electric lighting.

Ludvig's nephew, Louis Poulsen, joined the family business as a shop assistant in 1896, marking the start of what would grow into a world-renowned lighting brand built on Danish design tradition, where form follows function and light itself becomes the material to be shaped.

Light as material.

The ambition has never been only to design lamps, but to shape light itself. The way light is directed and diffused creates atmosphere, defines space, and influences how people feel. That philosophy traces back to 1926, when Poul Henningsen developed the pioneering three-shade system, a principle as simple as it was revolutionary: eliminate glare while creating soft, comfortable light.

Crafted at the Vejen Factory.

Located in the town of Vejen in Jutland, the factory is the beating heart of Louis Poulsen, where most products are hand-assembled by highly skilled artisans, many of whom have been part of the company for decades.

Premium materials are carefully selected from trusted partners for both durability and aesthetic appeal, with rigorous quality checks conducted on every piece to meet exacting standards.

Glass

Many shades are mouth-blown and sandblasted on the underside to create soft, diffused light.

Brass

Patinas beautifully over time when untreated, or finished in a fine brushed texture for lasting shine.

Aluminium

Used across a range of finishes, from raw to painted, valued for its durability and character.

Marble

A natural stone bringing quiet luxury and individual character to select designs.

Louis Poulsen designs with longevity in mind, built on functionality, aesthetics, and durability so that every lamp lasts for generations. Since 2014, a new limited edition has honored Poul Henningsen's craftsmanship each year, available for just three months at a time. Since December 2018, Louis Poulsen has been part of the FLOS B&B Italia Group, joining a family of legacy design brands guided by a shared belief in designing for a beautiful life.
