Captain's Chair

The Captain's Chair is Hans J. Wegner at his most disciplined. Designed in 1975, its strict geometry is softened by an embracing back and armrests that curve around the sitter in one continuous gesture. That apparent simplicity conceals exceptionally demanding craftsmanship: steam-bent wood meets paired sections cut from the same solid plank, with contrasting wengé veneer and tenons deliberately marking the points where the construction comes together. Availablewith a handwoven papercord seat or with upholstery, this chair distills Wegner's lifelong exploration of wood, joinery, and comfort into one of his most classically composed forms.
