Sonat Armchair

There is something almost calligraphic about the Sonat Armchair from Gärsnäs. Åke Axelsson draws its frame in long, uninterrupted lines of bent beech, allowing the wood to sweep from slender legs into gently curved arms and around the upholstered back. The effect is graceful rather than delicate, with every curve revealing an understanding of wood built over a lifetime of designing and making chairs. Upholstery brings softness to the seat and back while leaving the sculptural frame exposed, creating a beautiful tension between textile and timber. Even its practicality is handled with restraint: this chair can be stacked when needed, then returned to the table without ever feeling like a chair designed to disappear.
