The Dining Chair Guide

How to Choose a Dining Chair

A dining chair is sat in for hours and seen from every angle. Five considerations that decide whether one is chosen well.

Dining chairs around a table in a styled dining room

Measure from the seat to the top

A table feels right when there are 10 to 12 inches between the seat and the tabletop. On a table of standard height, that points to a seat of about 17 to 19 inches. If the chair has arms, confirm that they slide beneath the edge of the top.

Choose the back for the view

In a dining room, half the chairs are seen from behind. A sculpted shell, open slats, or a tall upholstered back gives the room its profile before anyone sits down, so look at a chair from the rear as well as the front.

Decide where the comfort lives

The precise support of a shaped wood seat, the softness of an upholstered seat, and the enveloping depth of a fully upholstered chair each suit a different kind of evening. Choose the one you want to settle into at the end of a long dinner.

Mix with intention

Chairs need not match to belong together. Keep one quality in common, such as the finish, the scale, or the seat height, and let the silhouettes differ. A pair of armchairs at the ends and a different design along the sides gives the table a composition of its own.

Let the leg answer the table

The leg is the detail seen most from across the room. Choose a line that answers the base of the dining table, whether it echoes the taper or offers a contrast, and the set reads as one idea.

Questions

Dining Chair FAQs

How many chairs fit along a table?

Plan about 24 inches of table edge for each seat. A 72-inch table welcomes three along each side, and a chair with generous arms may ask for a little more.

Where do armchairs belong at a dining table?

At the two ends, where their width gives the place a sense of occasion. They also suit the sides when the arms slide beneath the top, so check that they clear the apron of the table.

Can a bench stand in for chairs on one side?

Yes. A bench along one side tucks fully beneath the top, welcomes an extra place when guests arrive, and opens the sightline across the room.

What chairs suit a round table?

Chairs with a rounded back or a gently tapered seat sit comfortably against the curve of a round table, and they let more seats gather around the top.

Can dining chairs be used elsewhere in the home?

Yes. A dining chair makes a lovely desk chair, a seat at a vanity, or an extra place beside a console in an entry, and it returns to the table whenever guests arrive.

What if I already own the table?

Bring its height, its edge, and its finish, and our team can suggest chairs that sit well with it through Design Assistance.

Do chairs sit differently at a pedestal table?

A pedestal base clears the corners, so chairs can be placed anywhere around the top with no leg in the way. It suits a mix of chair widths and the occasional extra seat.

How much room does a chair need to pull out?

Allow about three feet from the table edge to the nearest wall or piece of furniture, so a chair can slide back and a guest can still pass behind it. A rug large enough to hold the chairs, even when pulled out, keeps them from catching its edge.
