A Custom Newton Home With Global Roots

A Custom Newton Home With Global Roots

Like most people, we're focused on future travels as a mental escape – scheming about when we'll get to rent a tranquil house on the Cape with all our friends, visit our favorite beaches on Long Island, or the exact route we'll tackle when revisiting our most treasured LA haunts. Part of this mental travel is looking at homes that inspire us to think beyond New England – in doing so, we discovered this globally-inspired home in Newton by Lindsay Bentis of Thread Design Studio (if you haven't stumbled her design expertise yet, we recommend a catchup). We can't wait to share this tour with you.

For this project, a Newton family's design ideology was shaped by the many places they've stayed while traveling the world – adventures in California, Wyoming, and tropical hideaways helped them garner an appreciation for natural materials found in the homes away from home, like wood, stone, concrete, and metal. These wide-reaching aesthetics drew them to design a home that is a blend of east coast and west coast ideologies, one that doesn't skew too harshly in any direction, and from the passerby largely remains within the spectrum of New England design, thanks to the beautiful custom build by Flavin Architects.

In most areas throughout the home you don't only see a structural mixing of organic materials, but a medley of textiles and finishes. We love the watercolor mural and built-in bench in the mudroom!

This Eilersen DaCapo Sofa (discontinued, unfortunately) seemingly at once grounds the room and melts into the color palette.

The room just off of the main family room was inspired by the intimacy and moodiness of the 11 Howard Hotel in SoHo, complete with custom steel doors.

To keep some flow throughout the home, the contrasts are echoed with consistency, like the wood and steel of the kitchen mirroring the ergonomic staircase that leads to the second floor. The Louis Poulsen Above Pendants look stunning in this setup.

Have you ever seen a screened-in porch like this one? We can't get over how lux this blue-grey paint looks. And this family has the best stool game we've ever seen! From the Eames® Walnut Stools to Ferm Living's Herman Stool, versatile pieces are their mainstay.

Just when you thought this home couldn't get any better, the basement has a built-in modern basketball court that we'd trade anything for right now.
