Silk Lantern Pendant

Suspended like a column of light, the Silk Lantern Pendant from Gubi has a presence that feels at once architectural and remarkably delicate. A tall cylinder of natural silk hangs within Ejner Larsen and Aksel Bender Madsen’s slender framework, its translucent surface catching the light and allowing it to deepen gradually toward the edges. Walnut veneer rings give warmth and definition to the otherwise weightless composition, while the dark steel details nearly disappear overhead. Originally conceived in 1951, the design turns the familiar language of the paper lantern into something distinctly Danish: precise in proportion, beautifully restrained, and made to transform the atmosphere beneath it.
