Vitra's Butterfly Stool is one of the most celebrated icons of twentieth-century furniture design. Created by Sori Yanagi in 1956, the sculptural form seamlessly blends the organic elegance of traditional Japanese design with the molded plywood techniques pioneered by Charles and Ray Eames. Composed of two gently curved plywood shells joined by refined brass fittings, the stool's silhouette evokes the delicate wings of a butterfly poised in flight. Its graceful proportions allow it to function as both seating and sculpture, making it equally at home in living rooms, bedrooms, galleries, and hospitality interiors. Available in molded maple plywood with a natural finish or richly grained Santos palisander, this stool remains a timeless expression of craftsmanship, innovation, and enduring design.
