Le Klint

A fold born from necessity and light.

Based on the need for better lighting in Danish homes, which were mostly limited to oil lamps, the architect and engineer Peder Vilhelm Jensen-Klint folded a lampshade for a stoneware petroleum lamp around the year 1900. He needed a shade to diffuse the sharp light of the flame and direct it, while keeping the paper away from the hot glass of the lamp.

Inspired by Japanese origami, P.V. Jensen-Klint developed the cross-pleating technique, allowing the shade to have a collar at an angle of 90 degrees to the straight pleats, a method that still defines every Le Klint lamp today.

Timeless over trend.

Le Klint does not chase short-term trends, instead focusing on timeless qualities in function, material, color, and form. Lamps from the 1940s, 50s, and 60s still look modern today, meaning a Le Klint lamp can hang in a home for decades and be passed down to the next generation.

A holistic approach extends across the entire supply chain, considering the lifetime of each lamp after it has been sold, so it can last as long as possible, be repaired when needed, and passed on to future generations.

Wood

Supplied by Danish partners on Funen and in Jutland, with natural variation in grain and color used as a beautiful reference to its source.

Glass

Sourced from European glassworks that hand-blow each piece, giving the glass a unique, living structure that can later be recirculated.

Metal

Produced largely by Danish suppliers under set requirements, with visible brass and aluminium parts coated to protect the surface.

Foil

A fire-retardant, antistatic, UV-resistant lampshade material made in Europe from a single material, so it can be fully recycled.

Paper

High-quality white and solid-colored paper made in Germany to stringent production and quality standards.

A craft that takes years to master.

Le Klint has kept its production in Odense since the company was founded there in 1943. The folding work is preserved as a craft in its own right: it takes roughly one year to learn the technique, and two or three years to master every model in the collection. The majority of Le Klint lamps can be serviced and repaired, so a long lamp lifetime remains a fundamental part of what sustainability means to the brand.
