Feel the grooves of history beneath your fingertips. Zanat, which is Bosnian for craft, blends UNESCO-recognized woodcarving traditions with visionary contemporary design. Every curve and texture is shaped by hand in Konjic, Bosnia, where four generations of artisans have transformed functional furniture into enduring works of art. By choosing Zanat, you bring heritage, sustainability, and tactile beauty into modern living.

Beyond the Carvings

Zanat's Sustainability

Sustainability in Every Grain

Every Zanat piece begins with sustainably sourced wood, shaped and finished entirely by hand. Nothing goes to waste. Even small offcuts are transformed into functional accessories, such as the Ombra Side Table, extending the life of each material and honoring the resource from which it came.

Zanat's Designers

Where Icons Meet Icons

Zanat works with some of the world’s most celebrated designers, including Naoto Fukasawa, Studioilse, Monica Förster, Sebastian Herkner, and Michele De Lucchi. These partnerships bring fresh design perspectives that elevate the centuries-old carving tradition into modern, globally relevant forms.

Zanat's Versatility

From Living Room to Lobby

Zanat’s collections are as adaptable as they are distinctive. Pieces transition seamlessly from residential interiors to commercial spaces—adding soul to a living room, elevating a hotel lobby, or making a statement in a gallery. Designs like the Genkan Console or Tara Shelving system marry form and function, proving that practicality and artistry can coexist beautifully.

Crafted by Hand. Designed for Life.

In a quiet Bosnian workshop, master carvers use a chisel and mallet to create intricate patterns—each stroke unique, each piece impossible to replicate. This time-honored technique, passed down through generations of the Niksic family, is recognized by UNESCO as part of the world’s Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Crafting a Legacy: From Village Craft to the UNESCO World Heritage List

Over a century ago, Niksic encountered a primitive wood-carving technique and, under the guidance of pioneering artisans, refined it into an exceptional art form. His mastery led him to collaborate with furniture producers, showcasing hand-carved masterpieces at international fairs. It didn’t take long for the world to take notice of the Konjic woodcarvers, whose work was displayed at some of Europe’s most esteemed exhibitions, including the “Hungarian Millennium” in Budapest (1896), the Brussels International Exposition (1897), and the Exposition Universelle in Paris (1900).

The Niksic family’s legacy continued through the generations, expanding into a renowned export business known for its high-quality craftsmanship. In December 2017, the technique that Gano Niksic helped perfect was officially inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list, recognizing its cultural significance and unparalleled artistry.

While Zanat has grown and adapted over the years, it remains firmly rooted in its heritage. Today, the company continues to honor its origins by collaborating with contemporary Scandinavian designers, breathing new life into the UNESCO-listed hand-carving tradition.
