Original Butterfly Chair

Released in 1958, the voluptuous curves on the Original Butterfly Chair create an intrinsically eye-catching design. The inherent springiness in the bent plies of the seat and back and the sculpted recessed shape, as well as the moulded wing shaped back provide a comfortable sit. The Butterfly Chair features the classic Windsor wedge joint, where the leg of the chair goes right through the seat; a wedge is then inserted into a cut in the leg, forming a remarkably strong joint. Sanded until flush with the seat, the joint provides a beautiful design element.

Ercol Page Logo

In 1920, young designer Lucian Ercolani started his own business in High Wycombe, the chair making capital of England. Here he perfected the technique of steam-bending wood  to form the famous Windsor Bow and discovered how to "tame" elm; a beautifully grained hardwood other furniture makers considered impossible to work with.

Design and people were the cornerstones of his company and this remains true of the family-owned company today, which is currently headed by Lucian's grandsone, Edward Tadros.

Ercol's passion for innovation in design and manufacturing is as strong today as it was then. Its 160,000-square-foot factory combines the latest technology with time-honored craftsmanship to create a unique range of pieces designed by Ercol's in-house team alongside design luminaries including Matthew Hilton, Sir Terence Conran and Russel Pinch.
