SUSTAINABILITY

At Lekker Home, we know that timeless, high quality design can be made without straining our planet's natural resources or compromising respect for our makers. Furniture and décor should be considered an investment in the quality of life for everyone. That's why we curate brands we believe in not only aesthetically, but also ethically

OUR SUSTAINABLE ETHOS

a philosophy rooted in all of our brands

Key Elements

SUSTAINABLY SOURCED WOOD

In an effort to protect our forests, several brands we work with utilize sustainably sourced wood: wood that comes from sustainably managed forests or that is recycled. This means when curating our design lineup we’re looking for wood products that follow FSC or PEFC standards. The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) ensure landowners are following sustainable forest practices - such as harvesting the land in a way that prevents damage to the trees and ecosystems, while also protecting workers' rights. By choosing furniture with sustainably sourced wood, you are directly contributing to a more positive future for the forests that keep our planet healthy.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

In addition to all of the aforementioned criteria, we constantly look to partner with companies who prioritize the health and happiness of their workers and local communities. Fair wages and safe working conditions are a must, but it is also important to us that brands who manufacture overseas establish foundations, trusts, or funds to uplift the communities that help them flourish and function.

GREEN INSIDES

When wood and textiles aren’t enough, we challenge our brands to show us that their products are just as green inside as they are outside. What exactly does a green inside mean? In terms of foams, this can mean natural latex foam (made from the sap of a rubber tree) or soy-based foam (made from soybeans). Both utilize plant-based, renewable materials instead of petroleum-based materials. When talking about sustainable downs, green options are organic downs or PET filled cushions –– synthetic down made from recycled water bottles. Even the inner coils and springs of a sofa can be made sustainably, using recycled metals.

TEXTILES

When choosing textiles, we make sure to prioritize organic or eco-friendly materials. Eco-friendly textiles are those that are made of natural or recycled fibers, treated with zero harsh chemicals or harvested sustainably. Some common eco-friendly textiles are organic cotton, wool, baby alpaca fur, silk, hemp, jute, and linen. And organic doesn’t just apply to food, if a textile is organic it means that it was grown without the use of synthetic pesticides or fertilizers. If a textile is not one of these, we look for fabrics with a GREENGUARD certification, which means they are certified to have low chemical emissions – keeping your indoor air clean.

OFF-GASSING

All manufactured items have a bit of a “new car smell” to them after being produced. Our brands are committed to ensuring that if there is a smell associated with a new product – it’s non-toxic. Volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, are the most common off-gassing chemical culprits. All of our brands use low VOC substances, allowing for non-toxic off-gassing, so when you're lounging you can rest assured our furniture breathes clean.

ENERGY EFFICIENT LIGHTING

While we all love the orange glow of an incandescent bulb, Lekker Home carries lighting that can be used with LED technology either through bulb selection or incorporated into the fixture itself. LEDs consume significantly less energy for the amount of output that they give, which adds up over their 10+ year lifespan, making them a more conscientious choice. Since we make sure our design-minded lighting is also energy-efficient and long-lasting, you don’t have to settle.

PRODUCT LIFE CYCLE

We believe that design is for living so it would be irresponsible for us to neglect how human life is affected by a product's life cycle. When considering the life cycle of a design, we're paying the most attention to what will happen to the product when/if it gets disposed of. Ideally, raw materials for every product are natural and ethically sourced, made with mindful design practices. This special consideration allows for parts to be disassembled and recycled at the end of the product’s life, reducing waste. In terms of benchmarks, we look for a Cradle to Cradle certification that speaks to the material utilization of each manufacturer.

LOW FACTORY WASTE

A part of sustainability that can be easily overlooked is what happens to the materials that aren't used. Byproducts and waste can always be repurposed for other uses instead of ending up in a landfill, and we support those who make that a priority. A common example of a waste-reducing practice is utilizing excess timber sawdust to heat factories through a biomass boiler. And non-burnable materials like textiles and leathers are often donated to schools or charitable foundations for re-use! Select brands have even chosen to become ISO 14001 certified - this certificate demonstrates continuous improvement towards reducing the effects of their manufacturing facilities and production processes.
