New Space, New Tradition, Same Community

New Space, New Tradition, Same Community

When we first started Lekker in 2003, we were one of the first family-run businesses a part of the Washington St revitalization – Natalie and Curt packing boxes at midnight and teaching themselves how to run a business from the ground up. The passion and constant drive to make Lekker a reality all stemmed from the simple desire to bring modern design to the U.S. in a warm and accessible way. They took a chance and succeeded, and became a link in the chain of the South End business community that is stronger than ever in 2019.

A few months ago, we announced that we were moving to a bigger showroom in the South End to fit our big ideas. And now, we can finally address the question everyone's been asking ...

Our New Home: 38 Wareham St

Opening July 2019

Following a long lineage of makers and furniture companies before us, like the Charak Furniture Company in the 1920s or the woodworking of Novelty Woodworks as far back as the 1860s, we’ve chosen 38 Wareham St for its rich history of bringing furniture and design to the South End of Boston. Constructed in 1863, 38 Wareham St was once the center of woodworking in Boston.

Novelty Woodworks was the first business that occupied our space, ran by J.J. McNutt, who was known as the father of Wareham St. McNutt grew up in Nova Scotia and moved to Boston at 20, designing and building 38 Wareham St in 1863 – acting frequently as both an architect and builder on many of his projects.

He was truly a master craftsman, his intricate and artistic woodworking helped him build the infamous Cyclorama as well as many hotels, theaters, and other manufacturing outposts all over Boston + the surrounding area! Until 1928, the space stayed woodworking-focused. A furniture manufacturer, the Charak Furniture Co., then moved in and became the nationwide leader of manufacturing reproduction colonial furniture during the 19th century.

We hope to continue the legacy of this space by being an epicenter that radiates the power of design throughout the city. To get an idea of our own history, our very first showroom in 2003 was only 2,000 sq. ft, our current space since 2013 is 4,516 sq. ft and now 38 Wareham St will double that at 9,200 sq. ft! Getting to fill this showroom with even more design for the neighborhood that's part of our DNA, feels like the greatest gift in the world. This means more to choose from, more to be inspired by, and endless vignettes that can help us all dream about what life would look like from the seat of a different sofa. It all comes full circle, and we’re beyond excited to be the next connecting point.

An ornate icon that represented the craftsmanship happening inside, still on 38 Wareham today!

Our New Look

Moving made us realize there was no better time for a new visual identity to match our new physical identity– we've been working in secret for the past couple months to shake things up! The original Lekker logo that we've had for the past 16 years was designed by Natalie's dear friend and roommate during the time she lived in New York, Beat Baudenbacher. Baudenbacher is the founder of the powerhouse design company, Loyal Kaspar – they've done incredible logo and branding work for ESPN, E! News, and ABC, just to name a few. Our main objective in rebranding was to create a homage to our previous logo and color of Dutch royalty while updating our look to reflect more of our warm modern sensibility. We couldn't be happier with the result.

So much change will be happening in the next few months, and we won't forget to take you along for the ride. Keep up with us on IG stories, here, and on all our socials for first looks!
