Womb™ Chair

Designed by Eero Saarinen, Knoll's Womb™ Chair was originally conceived at Florence Knoll's request. Wanting a "chair that was like a basket full of pillows", this mid-century classic lounge chair provides a cozy place to curl up and relax.

  • Classic Boucle: rich, nubby texture evocative of traditional hand woven upholstery textiles.
  • Ultrasuede:  premier microfiber with a soft, plush feel and luxurious appeal. This upholstery is extremely durable, stain-resistant, breathable, and easy to clean. It is the first of its kind to use partially plant-based polyester.
Volo Leather: a lightly corrected, aniline leather with a slightly raised grain texture. A special retannage enriches the leather and tightens the grain, giving a level of quality superior to other corrected leathers.
  • Acqua Leather: durable, water-resistant leather produced from hides originating in northern Italy, southern Germany, and Switzerland. A combination of a special retannage and finishing process results in leather that is water-resistant and anti-microbial.
  • Sabrina Leather: a full grain leather, ideal for those seeking elegant, fine-grained leather for high-traffic use.

Details

Like many of Eero Saarinen's furniture designs, the Womb™ Chair required production techniques and materials still in the infancy of their existence. Eero Saarinen and Florence Knoll found a boat builder in New Jersey who was experimenting with fiberglass and resin to help develop manufacturing methods for the new chair. Florence Knoll: “He was very skeptical. We just begged him. I guess we were so young and so enthusiastic he finally gave in and worked with us. We had lots of problems and failures until they finally got a chair that would work.”
